Welcome!Thank you for visiting Monty’s HomeInspired by the love and generous spirit of Monty – a once-in-a-lifetime therapy dog that succumbed to cancer on October 6, 2006 – Monty’s Home, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, currently serving Southeastern North Carolina. In May of 2008, Monty's Home received state approval to start its Pawsitive Partners Prison Program (PPPP) the first companion dog prison training program in Southeastern North Carolina, the largest in the entire state. Working closely with the administration of Pender Correctional Institution in Burgaw, NC a dedicated team of volunteers developed a program that not only benefits rescued animals, it benefits the inmates involved in the program as well. Monty's Home trainers select five dogs from a local shelter. After temperament evaluation, heartworm testing, spay/neuter and vaccinations, the dogs enter the PPPP. The dogs live at the facility and specially screened inmate-trainers take them through a nine week training course. After a class graduates, the dogs are adopted out in the community as family pets and five more shelter dogs enter the program. To see dogs available for adoption click here.
The volunteers at Monty’s Home come from diverse backgrounds, but share a common bond. We all want to help other pet owners deal with pet illnesses, geriatric ailments, end-of-life issues and parting grief. Pet lovers need somewhere to turn and someone who understands the shock, sorrow and stress that comes with hearing difficult news, and the tough decisions that news can bring. Monty’s Home offers non-judgmental support and education about alternatives and choices. For more information click here.
The Pet Ed 101 Program is the third in a series of programs offered by Monty's Home. The goal of this program is to teach school children about humane and responsible treatment of animals. The humane education program is designed to teach students: *Pet safety (how to safely approach animals, what to do if threatened etc.) Our educators incorporate fun activities as well as encourage discussion and participation in lesson plans to promote learning. At the end of the program, students have a better understanding of the basics of humane treatment of animals and care of pets. With 5 million dog bites in our country each year and millions being euthanized in our shelters…programs such as Pet Ed 101 is a beneficial addition to education curriculums in all our schools.
